Fukaya, a sister city since 1979, is a suburban center located about a two hour drive northwest of Tokyo. A city of just over 100,000 people, Fukaya boasts first rate city facilities such as a 1,200 seat performing arts center, a very large gymnasium called "The Turtle," several community centers, and an art museum.
Fukaya is currently constructing a huge indoor/outdoor recreation complex with water slides and wave making machines. Agriculturally, Fukaya is famous for a highly prized variety of leek. Activities with Fukaya have been especially lively with several exchanges of local performing arts groups, a visit by a Fremont youth baseball team, and a visiting group of Fukaya Boy Scouts who camped out at Coyote Hills. The large meeting room at the Fremont Main Library is named for Fukaya. Fukaya has named a main street for Fremont.
