Puerto Penasco is a town of about 30,000 inhabitants located on the northeastern tip of the Sea of Cortez, about a four hour drive from Phoenix. Based on a fishing (shrimp) economy, Puerto Penasco's population can double with Arizonans during popular tourist holidays.
Established as a sister city in 1971, Puerto Penasco has been the focus of many exchange activities including Fremont's donation of surplus fire equipment, the Flying Doctors Program, and the contribution of medical equipment.
Puerto Penasco has also been a favorite spot for the City sponsored youth program, Caravana Mexicana. Caravana participants have worked on improvements to local orphanages and other worthwhile projects in Puerto Penasco. The swim lagoon at Central Park is named after Puerto Penasco.
