Niles Business District

Niles made history in 1869 when the last tracks connecting the first transcontinental railroad from the Atlantic to the Pacific were laid.  One of five towns incorporated in 1956 to form Fremont, Niles was the home of Essanay Motion Picture Studios between 1912 and 1916.  Hundreds of "Bronco Billy" westerns, and scores of silent movies starring Charlie Chaplin, Ben Turpin, and Wallace Beery, were filmed in the streets of Niles.

Niles

In 1996, the State of California Main Street Program chose Niles as an official Main Street Community.   Today, Niles is a charming center of antique stores, specialty shops, and eateries along its main street, Niles Boulevard.  Niles is truly a unique district where you can rediscover the pleasures of shopping and dining in a historic Main Street setting.

Location and Access

Nestled between rolling hills and Alameda Creek, Niles is conveniently located off Mission Boulevard (Highway 238) and Niles Canyon Road (Highway 84), and is easily accessible by BART and AC Transit.

Redevelopment Project Area

The 138-acre Niles Redevelopment Project Area is located within the Niles Business District.  The Redevelopment Agency is taking the lead in the development of a comprehensive retail marketing and business recruitment strategy to attract new retail stores.

Recommended Retail Positioning

In an effort to strategically position Niles within Fremont, the City is working to retain and enhance its unique historic and cultural character through development of a comprehensive retail marketing and business recruitment strategy.  Long recognized as a regional antique center, over 80 businesses currently make up its commercial heart, with a diverse selection of restaurants, shops, and services.

The Opportunity

Fremont has a daytime population of over 109,000, with more than 23,000 located within approximately 5 minutes travel time of Niles.  The City of Fremont, in conjunction with Niles property owners and business owners, have combined efforts to reposition the Niles District to benefit from the trend towards main street retail shopping.  Niles is an ideal location for artisans, specialty retailers, and restaurants who want to take advantage of its attraction as a regional destination and gathering place.
