The information contained on this page is for candidates for Fremont City Council only. Candidates running for offices on special district boards that represent Fremont residents should contact the Alameda County Registrar of Voters at 510-272-6933 for information.

The City of Fremont holds its General Municipal Election in November of even-numbered years. 

The Mayor is directly elected and serves a 4-year term. 
 
Councilmembers are elected at-large and serve 4-year terms. The next scheduled local election will be November 4, 2008.

Eligibility for Candidacy

To be eligible to run for City Council, a person must be a registered voter of Fremont at the time nomination papers are issued.  In order to qualify as a registered voter in Fremont you must be:

  • A United States citizen
  • A resident of Fremont
  • At least 18 years of age on the date of the next election
  • Not in prison or on parole for a felony conviction

Candidates

There will be two Councilmember seats and the Mayor's seat up for election on the November 4, 2008 General Municipal Election Ballot.  The Mayor and Councilmembers are elected at-large and serve 4-year terms.

Nomination Period

This is the period when individuals officially receive, circulate and file nomination papers for candidacy. 

Nomination Period Opens

Monday, July 14, 2008 - 8 a.m.

Please make an appointment to obtain nomination papers from the City Clerk/Elections Official by calling 510-284-4060 beginning Monday, July 14, 2008.

Nomination Period Closes

Friday, August 8, 2008 - 5 p.m.

Nomination papers must be filed with the City Clerk/Elections Official not later than 5 p.m. on this date.  All relevant documents must be filed at the same time.

If an eligible incumbent does not file nomination papers by 5 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2008, the nomination period will be extended for non-incumbents only to 5 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2008.

  • Mayor - $2,211 per month
  • Councilmember - $1,407 per month

Term Limits


The directly-elected Mayor serves a 4-year term, with a full 2-term limit.  "No mayor who has served terms comprising 8 consecutive years as mayor shall be qualified for further service in that office until he or she has a break in service in that office of at least 4 years." [FMC Sec. 2-1107(a)]
 
Elected Councilmembers serve 4-year terms with a full 2-term limit.  "No councilmember who has served terms comprising 8 consecutive years as a Councilmember shall be qualified for further service in that office until he or she has a break in service in that office of at least 4 years." [FMC Sec. 2-1107(b)]
 

Campaign Contribution Limit


As of January 1, 2007, contributions to a candidate cannot exceed $500.00 [FMC Sec. 2-1402(a)].

Voter Information:

 

In order to qualify as a registered voter in Fremont, you must be:

  • A U.S. citizen.
  • A resident of Fremont.
  • At least 18 years of age on the date of the next election.

You Must Re-register to Vote if You Have:

  • Moved since you last registered to vote.
  • Changed your name.
  • Changed your political party affiliation.
