Teen Moms Visit FRC
New and expecting teenage moms from Fremont and Union City visited
the FRC November 29th. Accompanied by several of their high school
teachers and counselors, 38 teens heard presentations from
FRC Case Management, Social Services, 4C's, Child Care Links, YFS Infant Toddler Program, Public Health Nursing
and our neighbors, Tri-City Health Center. Co-sponsor Wendi Bennett
of the Fremont Unified School District Cal-Safe Program, was so
pleased with the program that she recommended it as an annual event.

8th Annual FRC Day Away
On October 5th, 105 staff members from 20 different FRC agencies
attended our annual conference designed to integrate FRC services.
This year attendees brainstormed new programs, learned about senior
services, employee self care, and enjoyed an intriguing presentation
on reinvention by best-selling author and motivational speaker, Peter
McGugan. The highlight of the day was awarding one staff member and
one agency for outstanding inter-agency collaboration. The Star
Collaborators are: Meena Kumar of 4Cs, and
Fremont Fair Housing and Landlord/Tenant Services,
meaning Mark Thomasee and Gloria Lando. Congratulations!

FRC Hosts Newark Guests

"Impressive" was the word heard most often at the October Newark
Outreach Event attended by Newark business and community leaders.
Fremont Vice Mayor Steve Cho, Fremont Human Services
Director Suzanne Shenfil and FRC Administrator
Judy Schwartz welcomed Newark Mayor
Dave Smith and guests to an open house designed to
showcase the wide spectrum of FRC programs and services available to
Newark residents. Our staff was equally impressed by the turnout
which included City of Newark council members and employees,
emergency personnel, educators, and a host of social service
providers. By sharing information and working together, we can serve
Tri-City residents more effectively.

Kaiser Helps Cabrillo Kids
The FRC is the recipient of a $15,000 grant from the
Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit Program to
support after-school and summer enrichment programs for Cabrillo
neighborhood kids. This includes the Jr. Giants Summer baseball
program, (with support from the
San Francisco Giants Community Fund), and funding
from the Cabrillo Mini-Grant Program, a parent-run program that gives
small grants to run after-school activities on school sites. These
programs are geared at increasing physical activity and reducing
obesity in children, with classes like Hip Hop and Cheerleading.

Supporting Local Families
Citibank employee Eva Soliver (right) presents a
$2500 grant to FRC Administrator
Judy Schwartz (left) for support of the FRC's Family
Economic Success Program. Eva has been an FRC VITA (Volunteer Income
Tax Assistance) volunteer since 2005 and a Money Smart instructor as
well. Thank you Eva and Citibank!
The FRC VITA program is part of Alameda County's Earn It! Keep
It! Save It! campaign, which is a collaboration of the
United Way of the Bay Area, the IRS, and
community-based organizations. We are very grateful for the
continuous support of this collaborative.

Community Building at Work
We are delighted that the community building work that the FRC has
been involved in for the past five years in the Cabrillo neighborhood
will now be sustained with Kaiser's help and through the volunteer
efforts of parents and community members on the Cabrillo Mini-Grant
Committee, as well as through the award of Prop 49 funding to Fremont
Unified School District for after-school programs at Cabrillo
Elementary School. We are extremely grateful to the
SH Cowell Foundation and the
Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund for their past
support of the FRC and the Cabrillo neighborhood, which has greatly
strengthened the Fremont FRC and enabled the Cabrillo neighborhood to
reach this level of community involvement.
