Volunteer Programs

Junior Giants Baseball Program

This is an exciting six-week co-ed summer baseball program from July-August, held in the Cabrillo Neighborhood. This program is open to children ages 5-13. No experience is needed as the S.F. Giants will provide a FREE one day training. This program focuses on self-esteem, teamwork, fairness and respect, rather than in wins or losses. Practices are two days a week, Mondays and Wednesdays, and games are played on Saturdays. Enrollment for volunteers is March-June. We are in need of Coaches and Assistant Coaches.

The Junior Giants program provides an important recreational opportunity for children who could not otherwise afford to play organized baseball.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Michele Gonsalves, Junior Giants Commissioner at 510-818-1746 or by email at mgonsalves@ci.fremont.ca.us

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)/Family Economic Success Program

Do you like to help people?  Then VITA and the FRC's Family Economic Success Program may be just what you are looking for!

VITA - Volunteer Income Tax Assistance - is a nationwide program established by the Internal Revenue Service that involves volunteers to help taxpayers who cannot afford professional tax assistance.  It is operated in conjunction with the United Way of the Bay Area's "Earn It Keep It Save It" Campaign for Alameda County.

VITA also helps those with special needs, including persons with disabilities, non-English speaking persons, and older taxpayers. Income level is relative to family size.  VITA volunteers explain how to claim the many special credits and deductions, including the EITC.  The volunteers will assist low-income individuals file their income tax returns, right down to any refund that may be due. Returns will be electronically filed by agency staff.  Volunteers will also link these taxpayers to additional services offered through the Family Resource Center assisting them to build their assets (including financial education, financial counseling programs for saving money, job opportunities, food stamps, and additional services offered within the community to help low income families build their assets).

Volunteers could be college students, law students, stay at home moms, members of volunteer or community organizations, business people, or retirees. Accounting experience is helpful but not necessary. The Family Resource Center, along with the IRS provides volunteers with free instruction and all training materials necessary to prepare basic income tax returns. A minimum of 20 hours  of required training will be conducted on Saturdays in January in Fremont.  Volunteers will be asked to commit a minimum of 2-3 hours per week (late afternoon/evening) on either Mondays or Wednesdays starting February 4, 2008 to April 15, 2008. The location for tax preparation will be at the Fremont Family Resource Center, 39155 Liberty Street, Fremont.

If you or your organization needs more information about volunteering, please contact:  510-574-2020 or send email to VITA@ci.fremont.ca.us.
