Parenting is a difficult job.  Children change dramatically as they grow and frequently parents are left wondering how to handle situations and need someone to turn to for assistance.
 
The City of Fremont offers several different programs for parents, children and teens that will help strengthen family relationships.

Adult with Children

Family Counseling

 
The City of Fremont's Youth and Family Services (YFS) offers Fremont residents family, individual, couple and group counseling with special attention to teen related issues.  The program works to strengthen family relationships by helping people to deal with times of stress or crisis.

Counseling Assistance at the Police Department

 
Youth and Family Services has a professional counselor working at the Fremont Police Department providing:
  • Diversion Counseling for first time juvenile offenders that have been referred by the Sergeant of Investigations.
  • Trauma/Crisis Counseling for citizens that have bee affected by trauma, violence, or other troubling events that have come to the attention of the Fremont Police Department.  Referrals are generally through the patrol or investigation officers.
  • Crisis intervention to individuals, couples and families.
  • Family and parenting intervention following a child abuse investigation.
Fees for services:  All crisis services and first appointments are provided at no charge to the client.  Follow-up counseling fees are based on household income and family size.  Some insurance accepted, including MediCal.

Truancy Intervention Program (TIP)

 
Is your child ...
  • Refusing to attend school?
  • Experiencing an attendance problem?
  • Lacking motivation towards school?
TIP is a joint effort of Youth and Family Services, the Fremont Police Department and the Fremont Unified School District to decrease truancy.  The truancy counselor and counseling staff provide crisis intervention, assessment and counseling to students (and their families) having an attendance problem.
 
Services include:
  • Addressing and resolving issues behind truancy.
  • Information - Providing information and education on the Education Code, the SARB process and education alternatives
  • Motivating youth towards academic success and/or vocational goals.
  • Improving coordination of educational services.
  • Family involvement to decrease truancy.
  • Referrals for other needed services.
  • Access to CASE (Community Alliance for Special Education)
Fee:  Three (3) No-fee sessions are available to families in a one-year period.  Co-payments on a sliding scale are based on income and family size.  Some insurance plans are accepted, including MediCal.

Infant-Toddler Program

Family Support Services

 
Located at the Fremont Family Resource Center, Family Support Services assists Fremont families resolve complex problems.  A Case Manager works with families to develop an action plan based on the goals the family sets for itself.  The program provides information about options, tools, and access to resources needed to resolve or stabilize the situation.
 
Services available:
  • Home or office visits to discuss family needs, goals, and resources.
  • Consultation as how to best meet those needs.
  • Service linkage and coordination with other care providers. 
  • Follow-up with the family.
  • Information and referral.
  • Consultation and advocacy with other care providers on clients' behalf.
