Workshops for Parents

Parenting is filled with joyous times, but also can present many challenges. Youth and Family Services, a division of the Human Services Department, offers a variety of parenting workshops and support groups for parents of the community.

All workshops are facilitated by experienced and licensed Marriage and Family Therapists.

Parent Project

Parent Workshop

This series of classes is for parents who may have a teen or pre-teen who:

  • Is "out of control."
  • Constantly argues.
  • Fights.
  • Refuses to go to school.
  • Is at risk of failing school.
  • Is experimenting in drug, alcohol use or gang involvement.

The series is for parents only, and meets weekly for thirteen weeks. It focuses on teaching effective ways to:

  • Discipline.
  • Reduce conflicts and arguing.
  • Improve the parent-child relationship.

This popular class fills up quickly and class size is kept to a limited number. Early registration is strongly encouraged.  The workshop is facilitated by Amy Scott, MFT, a YFS Counselor who has worked extensively with adolescents and their families through the Truancy Intervention Program.

Parenting 101: Essential Skills for Effective Parents

In a relaxed, conversational atmosphere, parents will learn important communication skills to improve family relationships and ease family tensions.  The emphasis will be on effective talking and listening strategies, and a powerful "win-win" method for problem solving and conflict resolution.  Working with other parents, participants will have the opportunity to share personal stories, learn new skills and practice these strategies in class sessions.  Join us for an informative series that will broaden and deepen your abilities as a parent.

The workshop is facilitated by Elaine Culverwell, MFT, who has over 20 years of experience working with the kids and parents of Fremont, both as a therapist and as a former teacher in the Fremont Unified School District.
