Red Light Photo Enforcement

The City of Fremont is joining a growing trend in the United States and other countries in using red-light cameras to target red-light runners. Fremont's first camera system was installed in August 2000 at the intersection of Fremont Boulevard at Mowry Avenue. Fremont now has a total of nine red-light camera systems in operation and intends to install a tenth intersection by June 2005. The following intersections are currently equipped with red-light cameras:
  • Auto Mall Parkway at Grimmer Boulevard
  • Decoto Road at Paseo Padre Parkway
  • Fremont Boulevard at Auto Mall Parkway
  • Fremont Boulevard at Decoto Road
  • Fremont Boulevard at Mowry Avenue
  • Mowry Avenue at Blacow Road
  • Mowry Avenue at Farwell Drive
  • Stevenson Boulevard at Blacow Road

    Coming soon:
  • Mission Boulevard and Mohave Drive
  • Mission Boulevard and Warm Springs Boulevard

Red Light Camera

Fremont's statistics show that between 1995 and 1998, there was a 31 percent increase in traffic accidents involving red-light violations. In addition to the current traffic enforcement measures, the City has decided to utilize the red-light camera system, known as REDFLEXred by Redflex Traffic Systems Inc., to address this issue.

Each system has two cameras, for a total of four images.

Image 2
Shows the vehicle has proceeded through the intersection during the red phase (therefore displaying a redlight violation).

Citations

All violators will receive a $381 citation with a copy of the photographs. A convicted red-light violation will have the penalty of one point on your driving record. Traffic school is an option for those who meet the court requirements, and information can be obtained through the Fremont Superior Court. If you have received a red-light citation at an intersection equipped with digital video(see above), you can schedule an appointment to review it with the Traffic Project Officer.
