Don't forget to pull permits.

A building permit is needed for all new construction because remodeling often involves changes to the existing electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems and may cause alteration to the framing of the room.

Kitchen and bathroom remodels and door and window replacements are some common upgrades that require a permit.

How Do I Get a Permit?

Development Services Center Staff

An owner or contractor can obtain a permit by filing an application in our Development Services Center.

If you are unsure or need additional information regarding permit requirements, please contact the Development Service Center at 510-494-4460.

Why is pulling a permit beneficial?

Because:

  • Staff will examine the plans and drawings for compliance with building codes and regulations
  • City inspectors will visit the residence to make sure the construction has been done according to the plans and building code requirements.

These regulatory services can improve the quality of work performed by your contractor. Remember sometimes a small oversight can cause major repairs later. For example, the lack of proper wiring can cause a serious safety hazard and improper waterproofing may lead to water intrusion and subsequent dry rot.

Next Steps

Smoke detectors must be in place at the time of final inspection of this permit. More information can be found under Residential Smoke Detector Requirements.
