Under direction, to maintain, repair, and overhaul light trucks, automobiles, and other mechanical equipment; to perform related duties as required.
Class Characteristics
This journey level classification is the first working level in the City's equipment mechanic classification series and is characterized by the responsibility to work on gasoline-powered equipment. Incumbents report to the Lead Equipment Mechanic. Assignments, objectives, and work steps are set and established work processes are to be followed; work review is occasional during progress or upon completion of assignment. It is distinguished from Heavy Equipment Mechanic by the latter's additional responsibility to maintain, repair, and overhaul diesel engine equipment.
Essential Functions
- Completes service orders on assigned vehicles and equipment by performing maintenance, repair and overhaul of light trucks, automobiles, construction equipment and other equipment.
- Uses electronic engine analyzer and other diagnostic equipment to diagnose and troubleshoot problems in all systems.
- Removes, repairs and/or replaces vehicle or equipment components including electrical systems, electronic systems, cooling systems, air conditioning systems, smog systems, hydraulic systems, internal combustion gasoline engines, and automatic and standard transmissions.
- Conducts smog checks for compliance with applicable laws.
- Responds to requests for emergency road service.
- Makes emergency repairs in the field.
- Test-drives vehicles.
- Drives trains and brake systems.
- Rotates, balance, and repair tires.
- Cleans work areas and related shop facilities.

Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of: Principles and operation of internal combustion gasoline engines; maintenance, repair, and overhaul requirements of light trucks, automobiles, construction equipment and other equipment; the uses of oils, greases and lubricating devices; the methods used to tune-up automotive vehicles; the use of testing equipment; automotive electrical principles and operations; automotive electronic principles and operations; maintenance and repair of hydraulic systems, air systems, cooling systems, and automatic and standard transmissions; reading schematic concepts; preventative maintenance inspection methods; garage safety procedures; the method of operation of a variety of automotive vehicles and equipment; the assembly and operation of auxiliary equipment typically found in vehicles, trucks and construction equipment; the vehicle safety code pertaining to lighting systems, smog control systems, and brake systems; the operation and use of gas and electric welding equipment; the methods used in metal fabrication.
Skill at: Operating automotive diagnostic equipment; operating and driving gasoline powered vehicles and equipment; using equipment repair tools.
Ability to: Maintain, repair, and overhaul a variety of automotive, construction, and other mechanical equipment such as light trucks, automobiles, construction equipment; diagnose and troubleshoot electrical circuits, electronic circuits, fuel systems, smog systems, brakes, differentials, automatic and standard transmissions, air conditioning systems, and hydraulic systems; use electronic diagnostic and repair equipment; remove, repair and replace major and minor engine component parts; overhaul internal combustion gasoline engines; use shop tools; make vehicle repairs and adjustments; work safely in an automotive shop environment; develop and maintain cooperative relationships with individuals from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
Incumbents must possess the physical and mental capacity to work under the conditions described in this document and to perform the duties required by their assigned position.
Education/Experience
Any combination of education and/or experience, which has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to satisfactory job performance, would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: graduation from high school and/or trade school and two years progressively responsible journey level experience in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of light trucks and automobiles.
Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required. Possession of, and ability to maintain during employment, a State of California Bureau of Automotive Repair Unlimited Emission Control Mechanic's License. Failure to possess or maintain the valid required license and or certificates shall result in discipline up to and including termination. Possession of a State of California Brake and Light License is desirable.
