What is Coastal Cleanup Day?
Coastal Cleanup Day is a national and international event that occurs one day per year. It is a large volunteer event that focuses on cleaning up local waterways, coasts, shorelines, bays and the ocean. In California, more then 700,000 people volunteer to participate in this event statewide. The California Coastal Commission is the driving force behind involving several non-profits and government agencies to coordinate events to include volunteers that wish to participate.
How is Fremont involved?
The City of Fremont's Environmental Services Division has been coordinating the Coastal Cleanup Day event in the City for the past 11 years. This local event has improved over the years, which has involved more than 600 volunteers removing over 12,000 pounds of debris, garbage, and recyclables from local waterways. Even though Fremont does not have any coasts, the trash that ends up in our local waterways and creeks eventually flow to the San Francisco Bay and affecting the coast along the Pacific Ocean.
