Sustainability Efforts

Environmental sustainability is a core principle for the City of Fremont. The Brundtland Report defined sustainability as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

The City is continually striving to reduce the impacts of its operations and programs on the environment and to encourage residents and businesses to adopt "green" practices.

Sustainable Practices

Fremont has adopted a Sustainability Policy for building and landscaping practices. The City has implemented projects that conserve energy, reduce solid waste, and protect waterways.

Green Task Force

In December 2007, the City Council established a citizen task force to discuss policies on sustainable practices, climate change, and new green technologies.  The Green Task Force will present a report to the Council in Summer 2008.

Climate Change

The City has taken many steps to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.  In November 2007, Fremont partnered with ICLEI to quantify emissions from City facilities and vehicles.  The first Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory is now available.

Green Business Programs

Fremont encourages local business to adopt environmentally friendly practices.  The City hopes to attract and retain businesses focused on green technologies, such as solar energy and biofuels.
