Bats

"Nearly 1,000 kinds of bats account for almost a quarter of all mammal species, and most are highly beneficial" - Bat Conservation International

Bats are wild and beneficial animals that are both pest controllers and pollinators. One little brown bat can eat up to 1,200 insects in one hour. Bats are wild animals that avoid contact with people.

Do Bats Have Rabies?

All mammals can carry rabies.  A small number (fewer than one-half of one percent) of bats carry them.  Bats bite only in self-defense and if a bat is approachable, it is usually sick.  If you encounter a bat in a state of inactivity, dead or alive, DO NOT TOUCH it, contact the City of Fremont Animal Services at 510-790-6630.

Are Bats Dangerous Like You See in the Movies?

No. Bats are non-aggressive and pose little threat.  For your own safety, bats should be left alone and should never be handled or touched.
