Food scraps and food -soiled paper products make up the largest percentage of our garbage in Fremont. In fact, about 20% of what we throw away is food waste, and it does not need to go to a landfill. We need to find alternate ways to reduce waste and recycle more. By participating in the food scrap recycling program, your food scraps become compost, a valuable resource, not a waste.
Why should I recycle food scraps?
- Reduce the amount of garbage going to a landfill.
- Food scraps are made into compost and given out to residents free at the annual Compost Giveaway event.
- Cuts down on wear and tear on your garbage disposal.
- Reduces landfill emissions that contribute to climate change.
How do I recycle food scraps?
- Line your kitchen pail with a paper bag, newspaper, or compostable liner to help keep it clean.
- Scrape your dinner plate into your lined kitchen pail, not the garbage.
- Empty the kitchen pail, including liner, into your green cart.
