Food Scrap Frequently Asked Questions

General Program information

Kitchen Pail

Odors, Animals and Insects

Q. What is the Fremont food scraps program?
A. The Fremont food scraps program allows you to place food scraps and some food-soiled paper products together with yardwaste in the green organics cart (formerly "yardwaste" cart). The food scraps can be collected in the kitchen pail provided by Allied Waste and then emptied to the organics cart as needed. The organics cart may be taken to the curb for collection on a weekly basis on your scheduled collection day. Allied Waste will collect the contents of the cart.

Q. What are food scraps and food-soiled paper?
A.  Food scraps are leftover or unused foods that are produced in your home. Food-soiled papers are 100% plain paper products (uncoated) that have come into contact with food.

Q. Where can I get the finished compost produced?
A.  Residents can pick up 2 free bags of compost at annual Compost Giveaway, held each Spring. The compost is available in bulk at the Newby Island Compost Facility for a fee.

Q. Do I have to participate in the food scraps program?
A. Participation in the food scraps program is voluntary. The food scraps program was added to the yardwaste program as a convenient way for residents to compost the food scraps instead of sending them to the landfill.

Q. Why use the kitchen pail?  What is it for?
A.  The pails are provided for convenient collection of food scraps and some food-soiled paper in your kitchen, and to carry these materials out to the green cart for service by Allied Waste.

Q. What if I don't have space to store a kitchen pail?
A. Kitchen pails were designed for counter-top use. However, they do come with a mounting bracket and can be hung under a counter, on a cabinet door, or a wall. The screws that are provided in your kitchen pail can be secured by using either a small Phillips or flat blade screwdriver.

Q. My pail is broken, can I get another one?
A. Allied Waste will replace your kitchen pail if it is not usable because it has been damaged or broken.

Q. Can I use a plastic bag to line the kitchen pail?
A. Please do not use plastic bags to line your food scrap pail.  The plastic does not break down in the composting process, and contaminates the finished compost product.

Q. Are there special pail liners available?
A. At this time, there are no special pail liners available. Therefore, please use only newspaper, paper bags, or no liners in your kitchen pail.

Q. What if I have no yardwaste?  Can I put just food scraps in my organics cart?
A.  Yes.  You may wish to wrap the food scraps in newspaper or paper bags to help keep the cart clean.

Q. Does all paper go into the organics cart?
A. No, only certain food-soiled paper, like paper towels and napkins, 100% paper (uncoated) paper plates and cups.
