Washing a vehicle at home can add pollutants to our local waterways and the San Francisco Bay. Although soap and detergents scour away oil, metals, dirt and other pollutants from the vehicle, the dirty water it creates carries pollutants into the nearest storm drain system. This dirty water further flows through pipes, channels and creeks until it reaches the San Francisco Bay where the pollutants are toxic to aquatic life and degrade water quality. |

Tips to Reduce Water Pollution
- Take your vehicle to a full-service car wash where the water is recycled and treated.
- At home, use only water without soap or chemicals, and direct washwater to landscaped area.
