Professional Recognition

The Fremont Fire Department is committed to providing high-quality customer service to the public.  The Department and its employees are proud to demonstrate to the Fremont community some of the results of their continued pursuit of professional excellence.

In 1997, the Fremont Fire Department was designated as one of only six Accredited Local State Training Academies by the California State Fire Marshal.

Community Event

The Department's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program has received numerous awards, including a Certificate of Appreciation from the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) and twice being honored (in 1999 and 2000) by the Mayor Business Council of the US Conference of Mayors with the Outstanding Achievement Award for Excellence in Public/Private Partnerships.

In 2000, the City of Fremont Fire Department, in conjunction with other City departments, received the Carolyn Keane Award for Programs for the Disadvantaged from the International City/County Management Association (ICMA).  This award recognized the Fremont Fire Department's efforts to improve access to city services for Fremont's deaf community.  In particular, the ICMA acknowledged the Fire Department's efforts to modify existing public safety outreach programs like CERT to better meet the needs of Fremont's deaf residents.

The Fremont Fire Department has always tried to provide the best possible service to the community.  It has also taken every opportunity to promote public safety.  So, the Fremont Fire Department was happy to move toward the two goals simultaneously when, in 2000, the California Office of Traffic Safety awarded it $80,000 towards the purchase of a new heavy rescue vehicle and the acquisition of 100 child car safety seats for distribution to the public.

The Fremont Fire Department's Deaf CERT program was given recognition by the prestigious Harvard University Innovations in American Government Awards Program for its creative approach to a pressing community challenge.  Deaf CERT was awarded semifinalist status in the 2001 competition for designing and implementing a program that gives high-level disaster preparedness training to deaf city residents.  Of over 1,300 applicants, only 99 achieved semifinalist status.

In light of the events of September 11th, the Fremont Fire Department has redoubled its domestic preparedness efforts.  In 2001, the Fremont Fire Department was awarded $280,000 as part of the Nunn-Luger-Dominici Weapons of Mass Destruction Grant Program.  The Department will use the grant funding to ensure that its personnel are well trained and equipped to protect the public.

The Fremont Fire Department is proud to be a part of the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation and is grateful for the "Humane-itarian" Award given to the Department in February 2002 by the Peninsula Humane Society for the Department's compassion, understanding, and efforts in supporting PHS' mission to ensure the humane treatment and improvement of the quality of life for all animals through service, education, advocacy and example.

The Department has made a commitment to working with health care and emergency services agencies to provide excellent customer service to the public.  This willingness to work with fellow agencies to provide quality public assistance has been recognized through a Certificate of Appreciation awarded to the Fremont Fire Department in May 2002 in recognition of its valuable contributions to the Alameda County Emergency Medical Services Agency and the residents of Alameda County.
