New Fire Stations

Three fire stations will be replaced using the Fire Safety Bond proceeds. These stations include:

The bond proceeds will fund the acquisition of replacement land, and the design and construction of three modern fire stations.

Replacement Reasons

  • The fire stations are among the oldest and smallest of Fremont's fire stations and the most seismically unsafe.
  • They range in size from 2,050 square feet to 4,650 square feet, whereas a modern fire station starts at about 7,000 square feet.
  • The apparatus bay doors are too low for new fire trucks and engines.
  • Stations #2 (Niles) and #6 (Centerville) were built as volunteer stations, with no plans to house 24-hour crews.
  • Station #8 (North Fremont) was established as a "temporary" station in 1972.

Updates

Fire Station #2 (Niles)

The new Niles Fire Station is programmed to house one engine and three additional pieces of apparatus that will maintain the high level of response. Staff has discussed a number of site options, including the existing fire station site and the corner of G Street and Niles Blvd. Community meetings were held in May 2004, January 2005, April 2005 and September 2005. A historic resource evaluation of this site is complete.  Site feasibility study to be completed in Spring 2006.

Fire Station #6 (Centerville)

The Centerville fire station will move from its current downtown Centerville location to the recently acquired property at the corner of Central Avenue and Dusterberry, the site has been used as the "truck center". The project is currently being designed taking advantage of the new larger site. This centrally located 10,000 square foot three or four bay station will house an engine company, truck company, a Battalion Chief, and has room for other additional modern equipment and program space.  The new location will improve the relatively high demand for Fire response in this district. It may have some training facilities as well as a 3,000 square foot storage building. The project is on schedule to begin construction in early 2006 and is expected to be completed in early 2007.

Fire Station #8 (North Fremont)

The North Fremont fire station will move from its existing location on Darwin Drive to a 1 acre (gross) parcel located across from Brookvale Shopping Center on Fremont Boulevard. The move from Darwin Drive to this new location will improve emergency response coverage. The construction of the new 10,000 square foot three-bay Fire Station is under construction and will be completed in late 2006.
