Frequently Asked Questions About the Paramedic Tax

Q. Why is the tax more than last year?

A. Voters approved increasing the City's special paramedic tax by the amount of each April's Consumer Price Index. The April 2005 CPI was 2.1%, so the tax increased from $13.50 to $13.78 for each benefit unit. The maximum amount of tax per benefit unit approved by the voters will be $15.00. Any increase above $15.00 will be taken back to the voters for approval.

Q. What is the 'CSA Paramedic tax'?

A. This is a tax for the countywide emergency medical services system, such as trauma centers and the Alameda County Emergency Medical Services District. Questions about this tax should be referred to the Alameda County EMS Agency at 510-618-2055.

Q. When I dial 9-1-1, who comes to my home?

A. Fire Department firefighter paramedics are the first responders to your home when you call 9-1-1. Since fire stations are located in neighborhoods throughout the city, the firefighter paramedics can reach your home quickly. The Fire Department will also notify the local ambulance company, so if you need to go to the hospital, an ambulance will be there for you.

Q. Do I get a bill for the Fire Department paramedic services?

A. No. Fire Department paramedic services are not billed to the user. You will get a bill from the ambulance company, if you use ambulance services.

Contact Information

If you have a problem on your tax bill, please contact: Fremont Fire Department at 510-494-4286.

The most common problem is a single family home built on two lots. Property owners get a tax bill for each lot and get billed twice for special taxes and assessments. In this case, the City will write to the County Assessor and have the tax bill revised so the property owner pays only one special paramedic tax.

Information we need:

  • Your name and property address.  Your mailing address if it's different from the property address.
  • Your "Parcel Number" which is located at the top left of the property tax bill.
  • A description of the problem.
  • Tell us how much of your property taxes you have paid: the first half only or the full year's taxes.
