Residential Addition Permit

Why do I need this permit?

Permits are required for all residential additions in order to verify the project complies with Planning and Zoning requirements for placement and design and that it complies with Building Code requirements for construction.

How do I get this permit?

The owner or contractor may apply for this permit.

The application must include, but is not limited to the following:

 Application

 Owner-Builder Verification form if applicable

Plans, including:  site plan; floor plans; exterior elevations; structural plans; structural calculations, if required; energy compliance information; automatic fire extinguishing plans, if required.

Project review times vary.  Appointments through our Development Services Center may be scheduled for some projects for over-the-counter reviews, while some reviews may take up to four weeks.

The permit can be issued once the application is approved and fees are paid. Visit our Fees page for a complete list of fees.

How much does it cost?

Permit fees for residential additions are based on the value and type of work and typically include administrative fees, plan review fees, inspection fees, construction tax and SMIP (Strong-Motion Instrumentation Program) fees. Additional fees may be required for automatic fire extinguishing systems permits and Fremont Unified School District school facilities.

What do I do once I get this permit?

Once the permit is issued work may begin.  The permit, approved plans and inspection record must be at the job site for the inspector to review.  Inspections are required at certain phases of the construction project and the owner and/or contractor are responsible for requesting these inspections.   Typically, the first inspection is the foundation excavation inspection and the work is considered complete once the final inspection is approved.

Smoke detectors must be in place at the time of final inspection of this permit.  More information can be found under Residential Smoke Detector Requirements.
