Why do I need this permit?

A permit is required for most permanent, temporary and promotional signs in the City of Fremont. The purpose of a sign permit is to ensure that the size, color and location of the sign comply with the City's Zoning Ordinance. In addition, the construction and method of attachment of permanent signs must comply with the applicable building codes.

Note: An electrical permit is sometimes required for illuminated signs.

For more information on specific signs, please see the documents below.

The completed application, along with a detailed description of the sign and its method of attachment, will be reviewed by the Development Services staff at the time of submittal. The staff may approve signs as submitted, conditionally approve signs, or deny the sign permit.

How much does it cost?

Please contact the Planning Department at 510-494-4440 for information on sign permit fees.

What do I do once I get this permit?

For painted signs, usually a final inspection is required after the work is complete. An exception would be if the sign is freestanding and a footing or foundation inspection is needed. During the final inspection, all issued sign tags should be attached. The applicant should also make approved plans with the permit available and provide access to the work. It may be necessary to provide a ladder or other means of access if the sign cannot be inspected from the ground.
