Structural Pest Permit

Why do I need this permit?

The repair of pest damage and dry rot requires a building permit to ensure the work is done properly. Repair work done by permit allows City staff to inspect the work and reduces the likelihood of the same problem arising at a later date. In addition, California law mandates obtaining a building permit for this type of work.

Smoke detectors must be in place at the time of final inspection of this permit.  More information can be found under Residential Smoke Detector Requirements.

How do I get this permit?

The owner or contractor can obtain a permit by filing an application at the City's Development Services Center at 39550 Liberty Street Map to Development Services Center 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to Noon on Friday. Most structural pest permits can be obtained by presenting the independent inspector's "termite report" and will not require a plan review, so long as the damaged material is replaced with new material of the same type.

How much does it cost?

Fees may vary depending upon the type of work required to address the problem, however, the usual fees for structural pest repairs are as follows:

a.      Permits that require one (1 ) inspection: $41.40 plus microfilming copy fee.

b.      Permits that require two (2) inspections: $89.70 plus microfilming copy fee.

c.   Microfilm fee: $0.69 each for 8 ½" x 11" or 8 ½" x 14" sheet size ($1.38 minimum). Additionally, it will cost $1.38 each for any other plan sheet size.

d.   Each additional inspection: $41.40 (when the number of inspections exceeds those included in the permit.)

*Please note: Additional Electrical, Plumbing or Mechanical permits costing $62.10 each may be required depending upon the type of repair. Also, a, b, & c above are subject to a minimum application fee of $41.40 and a CPF fee which is 10% of the permit(s) fee. Development Services Center staff will assist you in determining the type and number of permits required for your project.

What do I do once I get this permit?

At certain phases of the project, the owner or contractor will call for an inspection of the work. The name and telephone number of the inspector is located on the Inspection Record Card issued with the permit.
