Window Replacement Permit

Why do I need this permit?

A building permit is required for replacing or adding windows in your home. The Building Code regulates the amount of light and ventilation that must be provided for all habitable rooms as well as the minimum size for emergency exit from all bedrooms.

The size of the opening and the overall size of the replacement windows shall not be less than the size of the existing windows. If the rough framing around the window is being changed or if an additional window is installed in an existing exterior wall, the requirements of the current code must be met.

Smoke Detectors must be in place at the time of final inspection of this permit.  More information can be found under Residential Smoke Detector Requirements.

How do I get this permit?

Permits are issued at the Development Services Center at 39550 Liberty Street Map to Development Services Center 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to Noon on Friday. Window replacement permits are issued over the counter and the applicant needs to provide a floor-plan sketch showing the locations of the windows with the existing sizes and the new window sizes noted. Click here to access the Permit Application Form.

What do I do once I get this permit?

After the permit is issued, window replacement work usually requires only a final inspection once the work is completed. Newly-added windows and existing windows with changes in framing would require rough-framing inspections.
