Transportation Permits

Why do I need this permit?

Transportation Permits are needed to ensure oversized loads are routed properly through the City. Proper routing avoids accidents due to low underpasses and other clearance issues.  Oversized loads can also require pilot cars to ensure the public is aware of their presence.

Transporters must also choose their route using City approved truck routes when possible. Please download the following truck route map to assist in preparing your route. You must stay on approved truck routes as much as possible to your nearest point of entry to your destination, but you must make sure the route is appropriate based on the dimensions of your load. The transporter is responsible for verifying all clearances prior to making the actual trip.

Transportation Permits are issued for extra sized legal loads.  The dimensions for legal loads that don't require a permit are:  14' high or less, 8'6" wide or less and 40' long or less.  Anything over these dimensions requires a Transportation Permit.

How do I get this permit?

Permits can be issued by fax if the transporter has an account with the City.  We do not issue permits with credit cards.  If someone wants a permit but they do not want to set up an account they can go through a permit agency or come to the City at 39550 Liberty Street, Second Floor, Transportation Engineering Division in person and fill out a permit. Business hours are 8 a.m. - noon and 1 p.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday, except holidays.

A transporter must obtain City of Fremont Police Department approval/signature on the permit if a house is being transported or a convoy is planned. Please contact the Traffic Division at 510-790-6800 for details on how to secure their signature on the permit for these instances.

If a house is being transported, arrangements must be made with the Police Department in advance in case traffic control is needed.  Also, check with Development Organization/Planning at First Floor, 39550 Liberty Street, to make sure they have proper permits for the delivery location. (This is only if the house will be delivered to Fremont.)

All transporters are required to have current auto liability insurance on file and a copy of the current auto liability insurance certificate must be forwarded to the Transportation Engineering division. The City does not require being named additional insured.

How much does it cost?

Single load permit (1 trip) fee is  $16.00. If the transporter is making 2 or more trips with the same vehicle to the same location the moves can be put on the same permit but the permit fee needs to reflect this, (example: 2 trips, permit fee is $32.00).  The permit must be filled out with all the required
information and a complete route.  Permits are good for 6 days from the date of issue.

Annual Permit Fee is $90.00.   This permit will always begin with the letter A followed by the number.  A copy of the State Permit is required to go along with our permit. The annual permit is issued, except for the dates, exactly like the state permit. The permit is good for one year (example: 1/20/2006 – 1/19/2007). If the company already has a permit for the same vehicle on file and it is getting ready to expire, the issue date will be from the date the previous permit will expire and give one year from that date.  A copy of a truck route is always given when an annual permit is issued.

What do I do once I get this permit?

Once you get your permit you can begin transport of your load.
