Business License (Tax)

The City of Fremont uses the term business tax rather than business license. The business tax registration fee for most commercial businesses located in Fremont is $30. The fee for business tax registration renewal in subsequent years consists of $30 plus a business tax that is based on the type of business according to information provided on your business application. Businesses located outside of Fremont but doing work in Fremont are also required to register for business tax.

To register a business in Fremont:

  1. Check to see if you qualify for a Business Tax Exemption

  2. If you do not qualify for an exemption, you will be required to complete a Business Tax Application Form and submit with payment to the City of Fremont Revenue Division, 39550 Liberty St., P.O. Box 5006, Fremont CA 94537-5006.

  3. If you will be doing business in Fremont from a location outside of the City limits, you will need to complete an Out of Town Business Registration Information
  4. If you will be running a business from a residence, you will also need to complete the Home Occupation Permit
  5. Certain businesses may require additional permits and may incur different tax rates. Please contact the Revenue Division for information.

  6. You are required to renew your Business Tax yearly.

Business tax registration applications are also available at the Revenue and Treasury Division Cashier Window of the Financial Services Office in the Development Services Center at 39550 Liberty Street, at the corner of Liberty and Kearny Streets, one block from Stevenson Blvd. Office hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 AM to 4 PM, and 8 AM to noon on Fridays. The Revenue Division of the Finance Department can be contacted at 510-494-4790.

Please Note
If your business has closed, you must notify the City in writing of the date of closure. Please sign and date the letter and return it to our office located at:

P.O. Box 5006
Fremont, CA. 94538-5006

If your business had income or payroll depending on the basis of your particular tax, then you should send payment for your closing gross with the letter.
