Work Permits for Minors

With some limited exceptions, no minor under the age of 18 shall be allowed to work without a work permit. Additionally, no employer shall employ a minor under 18 without a permit to employ. It is the responsibility of the employer to obtain a permit to employ and to ensure the minor has a permit to work.

Work Permit Application

Applications for work permits are issued by the school authority at the school which the minor attends. During summer vacation and holidays, the needed documents are issued at the main School District Office.

The minor typically:

  1. Obtains the permit application.
  2. Completes a section.
  3. Has the employer complete a section.
  4. Returns the application to the appropriate school authority where, if approved, the work permit is issued.

Work permits are not needed for odd jobs in private homes, where the minor is not regularly employed, such as:

  • Lawn mowing
  • Window washing
  • Housecleaning
  • Babysitting

Entertainment Permits

Entertainment permits are issued in person at the State Labor Commissioner's Office. For the location servicing this area call 415-557-7878.
