Selecting a Contractor

Selecting a contractor is one of the most critical aspects of your construction project. The time spent reading your contractors' bids and contracts, checking licensing and references, and visiting previous jobs can save you a lot of time and trouble later on.

All contractors in the State of California must be licensed in their respective trades. Contractors who work on home improvement must also have additional specialized licensing.  Examples of home improvement are the construction, erection, replacement or improvement of:

  • Driveways
  • Swimming pools, including spas and hot tubs
  • Terraces
  • Patios
  • Awnings
  • Gazebos
  • Storm windows
  • Landscaping
  • Fences
  • Kitchens
  • Baths
  • Garages
  • Basements
  • Other structural improvements on land adjacent to a dwelling

The California Contractors State License Board has many valuable publications and essential information on their website. Be sure to check it out.
