City of Fremont Human Relations Commission Sponsors 2006 Make a Difference Day

October 16, 2006

Saturday, October 28th, 2006 is the national "Make a Difference Day 2006", the 16th year of this national day of volunteering, and the ninth year that Fremont will be participating. The City of Fremont Human Relations Commission (HRC) is sponsoring the event to celebrate unity in diversity through community service.

Over the last nine years, thousands of Fremont residents have helped thousands of others through projects big and small. School PTA's and students, service clubs, community-based organizations, and local companies have joined together on this special day to make the community a better place or lend a helping hand to Fremont residents less fortunate than themselves.  This year, some of the over 20 projects already planned for October 28th include:
  • Clean ups and beautification projects at Oliveira Elementary School and Niles Perennial Garden
  • A self defense class for women over 55 years of age at the Senior Center
  • A food drive for seniors in need
  • Graffiti removal at Quail Run
  • A free haunted house at Chadbourne Elementary School
  • A mitten, sock and glove drive for the Tri-City Volunteers
  • A distribution of essentials to the homeless by the Washington High School PTSA
  • A garden overhang roof repair, a garage door repair and  bathroom remodeling for  frail and ill seniors
  • A new clothing and school supplies for One Child
  • A clean up and planting at Duck Island
  • A collection of gift cards/certificates for medication and toiletries for seniors in need

The HRC would like to enlist your participation to help make "Make a Difference Day 2006" the biggest yet!  The event is a great opportunity for organizations to create projects or volunteer at other community projects located throughout Fremont. This is also a great opportunity for high school students to earn community services ours toward their graduation.

To learn more on how to create a project or volunteer at a project already planned, please contact Dr. Len Kruszecki, the Make a Difference Day Coordinator, at (510) 574-2042 or email makeadifferenceday@ci.fremont.ca.us.

To post your own project or look for volunteer opportunities, you can go to http://www.makeadifferenceday.com/. Simply click on "DAYtaBANK" and enter "Fremont."  Make sure to post your project so the City of Fremont Make a Difference Day Team can help recruit volunteers for your project.  New projects will be added until October 28th, 2006.
