The US Environmental Protection Agency announced yesterday that it has awarded a $200,000 grant to the Fremont Redevelopment Agency for soil remediation at the former Union Pacific railyard in the Niles District. The Redevelopment Agency is scheduled to begin removal of contaminated soil at the site in late summer, in preparation for construction of the Niles Town Plaza.
The Fremont project was one of 17 selected to receive a Brownfields grant from EPA Region IX, which covers California, Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii. The Brownfields program is part of EPA's effort to promote redevelopment of contaminated parcels of land.
"The Brownfields Grant Program is intended to help local jurisdictions convert contaminated properties into community amenities," said Fremont Mayor Bob Wasserman. "That's exactly what we're doing in Niles. It's terrific that the EPA recognizes the value of this project and is supporting it with funding."
The Redevelopment Agency anticipates completing the soil removal by the fall. Construction of the plaza will begin in late 2007.
