Tri-Cities Landfill Closing to the Public June 30, 2007 - New Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station to Open July 2

June 14, 2007

The Tri-Cities Landfill, located at the west end of Auto Mall Parkway, will close it gates to the public at 5 p.m. on June 30, 2007. The landfill, formerly called the Durham Road Landfill, has been accepting solid waste since the mid-1960s. Beginning Monday, July 2, 2007, the Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station, located at 41149 Boyce Road, will be the new public waste disposal facility.

The new Transfer Station on Boyce Road is located close to the existing landfill and is easy to get to from Auto Mall Parkway and Interstate 880. It will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and closed Sunday. Self-haulers will need to coordinate disposal by 5 p.m. on Saturday or wait until Monday morning to dispose of materials at the Fremont Transfer Station. Alternately, the Davis Street Transfer Station in San Leandro is open for public disposal on Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"The new transfer station is a state-of-the-art recycling and waste transfer operation that has been designed to be very efficient for the public," said Jim Pierson, the City's Transportation and Operations Director. "Users of the new disposal facility will find easy access and the convenience of unloading their debris inside of the specially constructed building."

Discarded materials, such as yard and wood waste, scrap metal, cardboard, and construction debris will be sorted and recycled.  Materials that are not recycled will be transported from this facility to a landfill. The Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station has been designed to meet increased demand for recycling and waste handling services for the Tri-Cities well into the future.
