Press Release
Niles Town Plaza Groundbreaking Celebration

July 10, 2007

The City of Fremont invites you to join City officials and City staff to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Niles Town Plaza project.  The groundbreaking celebration will be held Thursday, July 12, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., in City Parking Lot #1, located at the intersection of Niles Boulevard and H Street, adjacent to the site of the future Plaza.  Parking for the event will be available along Niles Boulevard as well as in City Parking Lot #2, located on Niles Boulevard between I and J streets (next to the large flag pole).

The groundbreaking will mark the start of the City of Fremont Redevelopment Agency's environmental clean-up and construction work on the former Union Pacific Railyard Property, which the Agency acquired in 2005.  Speakers at the groundbreaking event will include City of Fremont Mayor, Bob Wasserman; City Manager, Fred Diaz; Redevelopment Agency Director, Elisa Tierney, Carolyn Douglas of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in addition to City staff.  During the event, the City will receive a $200,000 check from the EPA as part of their Brownfields Grant Program; this program is designed to help local jurisdictions convert contaminated properties into community amenities. A reception with refreshments will immediately follow the ceremony.

Work on the two-acre Plaza should be completed by fall 2008.
