The Fremont Family Resource Center will one again host Money Smart, a six-week financial education course developed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. - this time with a twist. In the past, the Family Resource Center has offered Money Smart in English. Now, reaching out to Fremont's Chinese population, the course, which begins Wednesday, Oct. 3, will be taught in Mandarin. The course is designed to inform immigrants about U.S. banking services, reinforcing the importance of money management, understanding credit reports and FICO scores, building and maintaining good credit, understanding loan terminology and mortgage products as well as investment products, including recognizing predatory loan practices, identity theft, and consumer rights.
Each class will be taught by volunteers, all of whom are Mandarin speaking financial services professionals from the financial industry, including: Citibank, CalStar Properties, Integrus Investment Group, and Smith Barney. The volunteers are interested in helping class participants build financial knowledge, develop financial confidence, and use financial products effectively.
The Money Smart course will cover:
Oct. 3 Borrowing Basics and Savings
Oct. 10 Basic Financial Management
Oct. 17 Utilize your Credit
Oct. 24 Consumer Rights
Oct. 31 Loan Basics
Nov. 7 Your Own Home
