Auto Repair

Repair, fabrication or other work on automobiles, other vehicles or equipment on residential premises shall be subject to the following conditions and restrictions:

Vechile Repair

  1. Such work shall be limited to minor automobile repair on those vehicles or equipment, which may be stored within a private garage upon residential premises.
  2. Such work shall be done only upon such vehicles or equipment which are owned by a resident of the premises.
  3. Such work shall be done only between the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.
  4. Such work shall not be done in a public right-of-way.
  5. Storage of parts for such vehicles or equipment on the premises shall be limited to those parts reasonably necessary for repair of the occupant's vehicle or equipment. Parts which cannot be conveniently located within an enclosed structure shall be screened from view from the public way and adjacent property, and may not occupy any required open space prescribed elsewhere in this ordinance.
  6. Flammable liquids shall not be used in any building or residential premises in connection with such work, and no welding or torch cutting may be done anywhere on such premises except by permit obtained from the City Fire Marshal. All such work shall be conducted in conformance with the applicable provisions of Fremont Fire Codes and all other applicable codes and regulations.  To contact the City Fire Marshal, call 510-494-4213.
  7. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary herein, no such work shall be permitted which creates a nuisance or which otherwise tends to deteriorate the environment, peace, tranquility and enjoyment of the residents in the surrounding neighborhood.

Vehicle Parking

Q. Is there any City ordinance that regulates where I can park my cars, trucks, RVs and boats?

A. Yes there is. In an effort to preserve the beauty of our neighborhoods, to maintain high levels of visibility for drivers, and to maintain pedestrian safety, the City does regulate where oversized vehicles may be parked.

Q. Can I park my car, truck or Recreational Vehicle on the street in front of my house?

A. You may park any motorized vehicle on the street as long as it is less than 20 feet long, for up to 72 hours. If your vehicle is longer than 20 feet, you may park in the street to load and unload for short periods of time, but overnight parking is prohibited.

Q. Can I park any of my vehicles in my driveway?

A. You may park any motorized vehicle in your driveway, as long as it is less than 25 feet long. By driveway, we mean the permanently surfaced area leading directly to the garage or carport, or the permanently surfaced area which is next to or extends the existing driveway. You may not park any vehicle in or on your front yard.

Q. If my vehicle is too long to park on the street or in my driveway, where else can I park it?

A. You may park it in your garage, or in your side yard or rear yard. If you park it in your side or rear yard, it must be blocked from public view by a five-foot (or higher) fence, wall or hedge. Please note, however, disabled, dismantled, wrecked, or inoperable vehicles are prohibited from being stored unless they are stored completely within an enclosed building.  Some residents choose to rent space in storage lockers or other storage facilities for their vehicles.

Q. Where can I park my tent trailer, boat trailer, utility trailer, or my horse trailer?

A. Non-motorized vehicles, specifically trailers, may not be parked on residential streets or in driveways, at any time, unless they are hooked up to a motorized vehicle, but this is still subject to other restrictions such as the 72-hour rule.  Please park them in your garage or in your side or rear yard. They must be blocked from public view by a five-foot (or higher) fence, wall or hedge.  For information on permitted fence heights and locations, call 510-494-4440.
