Kato Road Complete Streets

Project Overview

The Kato Road Complete Streets Project will enhance Kato Road between Warren Avenue and Milmont Drive with the following improvements:

  • Widen Kato Road on the west side and install curb and gutter
  • Construct a 12’ wide bicycle and pedestrian trail on the west side of Kato Road
  • Install landscaped areas, where possible, to separate the roadway from the trail
  • Install enhanced pedestrian/bicycle crossings at major driveway entrances
  • Install a two-way left turn lane north of Auburn Street and a raised median south of Auburn Street
  • Install crosswalks on all legs of the Kato Road/Milmont Drive intersection with smaller radius at the southwest return
  • Construct signal modifications at the Kato Road/Milmont Drive intersection
  • Install a truck parking zone near Auburn Street

Project Goals

The Kato Road Complete Streets Project seeks to achieve the following goals:

  • Implement complete streets principles and increase bicycle and pedestrian safety along Kato Road
  • Reduce and calm vehicle travel speeds
  • Decrease congestion through improved transportation alternatives
  • Complete two miles of trail that will help to extend the East Bay Greenway regional trail to the southern city limit of Fremont and the overall Alameda County regional trail network

Preliminary Design & Environmental Review – Summer 2021
Final Design – Spring 2022
Construction – Summer 2022
