April 14, 2020 City of Fremont Update in Response to COVID-19

Covid update text

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an evolving, unprecedented public health crisis that has necessitated several emergency measures to keep the Fremont community safe and help slow the spread of the disease.

Today’s update highlights street sweeping services have resumed; annual Children’s Mental Health Awareness Virtual Art Competition; and Aqua Adventure Waterpark opening date is delayed.

Street Sweeping Resumes in Fremont

Beginning April 13, 2020, street sweeping on major streets resumed in the City of Fremont, with street sweeping services to begin April 20 on neighborhood streets. Street sweeping will follow the existing regular monthly schedule. You can view the street sweeping schedule for your neighborhood online, or call 510-979-5700.

The City reminds residents to move their vehicle(s) off the street the night before their scheduled sweeping day to ensure clean streets for Fremont. This allows the street sweeper to clean the gutter, where most pollutants and debris settle.

Street sweeping is considered an essential service that can be performed under the revised Shelter in Place Order issued by the Alameda County Public Health Department to help limit the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). City employees performing street sweeping services will be observing social/physical distancing and wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which will include a mask.

The City is committed to providing this service to remove harmful pollutants, clean debris from the gutters, and to protect the San Francisco Bay as we comply with regulations set forth by the Regional Water Quality Control Board.

City of Fremont Human Services Department to Host 2020 Children’s Mental Health Awareness Virtual Art Competition

To celebrate the art, creativity, and resiliency of Fremont students, the City of Fremont Human Services Department, Youth and Family Services Division in partnership with Fremont Unified School District, is hosting the third annual Children Mental Health Awareness Virtual Art Competition.

Last year, the City received 179 submissions from Fremont Unified School District students. This year, during the COVID-19 public health crisis, the City and Fremont Unified School District are collaborating to share information about the competition to students and families. Students have an opportunity to work on their art submissions during the school closure and Shelter in Place Order. They are encouraged to help promote mental health awareness and the theme of “Sharing Feelings and Hope” through drawing, painting, collage, photography, sculpture, creative writing, or short film.

This year, students are being asked to submit their entries digitally. Finalists will be announced on Thursday, May 7, in honor of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. A judging panel made up of the City’s Human Relations Commissioners, Fremont Unified School District Board of Education Members, local social service agency representatives, fine artists, graphic designers, and City of Fremont employees will select winners. A virtual awards event, highlighting works of the winners in each category, will be held later in May.

For more information about the art competition or event, please call the City of Fremont Youth and Family Services Division at 510-574-2100 or visit our webpage.

Aqua Adventure Waterpark Opening Date Delayed

While the City of Fremont looks forward to welcoming guests to Aqua Adventure Waterpark this summer, there is currently a great deal of uncertainty in regards to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our highest priority at Aqua Adventure remains the safety and well-being of our customers and team members, as we continue to follow the guidelines under the revised Shelter in Place Order issued by the Alameda County Public Health Department

Preparation to open the waterpark each year begins in the early spring and takes many months to recruit, hire, and train staff; purchase equipment; and perform facility tests and overall site readiness. Due to the current mandated Shelter in Place Order, the waterpark will not open on Memorial Day Weekend. While it’s too soon to announce a new opening date, we remain committed to opening Aqua Adventure Waterpark this season as soon as safely and responsibly possible. We appreciate your understanding during this rapidly changing situation.
