Rehome a Pet

Fremont, Newark & Union City

Rehoming, Read This First

  1. Start by contacting the shelter, rescue, breeder, or previous owner you got your pet from. You may be required to return the animal, or they might be able to take them back to avoid a shelter surrender.
  2. Help your pet find a new home by spreading the word. Share clear photos and a detailed description with friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors. Post online and ask others to share. Community forums and local networks can help connect you with potential adopters.
  3. Submit a profile to Home To Home.
  4. Post your pet on Rehome by Adopt-A-Pet, which allows you to set an adoption fee, create an adoption contract, and review potential adoption applications.

Surrender to the Shelter

  • Surrendering your pet is giving up your ownership and legal responsibility for the pet.
  • Rehoming a pet is never easy. The shelter should be a last resort, please explore all other options first.
  • The shelter is not legally required to accept owner-surrendered pets. However, if you have exhausted all alternatives, you can email us to check for available space.
  • The shelter operates at near capacity throughout the summer months.
