ADU Amnesty Program

Inspector, ADU, and person opening door

If you are a property owner who has an unpermitted Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) or Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (JADU), legalizing it is the best way to protect your investment. Getting it permitted ensures your space is safe to live in and allows you to take full advantage of the property’s value. It also gives you peace of mind knowing the unit meets legal and safety standards.

The City has a program to help get your unpermitted ADU/JADU legalized!

Program Information

If you have an ADU/JADU built prior to January 1, 2020 without permits, you may qualify for a permit process to help you legalize the structure through the City's ADU/JADU Amnesty Program. This program complies with California Assembly Bill (AB) 2533, a state law codified as Government Code section 66332.

By applying for this program and legalizing your ADU/JADU, you can protect yourself from code enforcement actions such as fines, penalties, or orders to remove the structure. If your ADU/JADU has violations that are not immediate health or safety risks, you can have up to five (5) years without penalty to complete the necessary improvements, bring the unit into full compliance, and apply for a building permit.
