Fremont Boulevard/Country Drive Intersection Improvements

Overview

The Fremont Boulevard and Country Drive Protected Intersection Project is located on the Fremont Boulevard corridor frontage to Washington High School. The project intersection is along a safe route to school route identified for Washington High School. The project intersection is also in close vicinity of Stratford School (private), Prince of Peace School (private), Centerville Community Park and multi-unit housing along Country Drive and the surrounding area. In addition to providing local connections, the project intersection is located a few blocks north of the Fremont Downtown District. Fremont Boulevard is also identified as one of AC Transit’s busiest transit corridor in south Alameda County.

The work to be done consists of:

  1. Removing the existing “pork chop” traffic islands and free right turn lanes at the northeast and southeast corners of the intersection.
  2. Constructing enlarged, elevated curb returns at each corner of the intersection that minimizes vehicular conflict with pedestrians and bicyclists and shorten intersection crossing distances.
  3. Increase the size of the pedestrian refuge waiting area.
  4. Install ladder crosswalks and green conflict zone markings.
  5. Install ADA directional curb ramps.
  6. Removing and replacing the existing traffic signal system with new traffic signals equipped with modern signal technology equipment.
  7. Removing and replacing existing traffic striping.

Schedule

Construction activities are anticipated to be completed by April 2024. 

Traffic Impacts

A minimum of one traffic lane in each direction will be kept open at all times to the extent possible. In general, most of the work will take place Monday through Thursday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on Fridays.

Funding

The project’s construction is partially funded by Transportation Development Act (TDA) funds administered by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and through a grant utilizing Measure B funds administered by the Alameda County Transportation Commission.
